Obituary for John Joseph Yakely III

Funeral services for John Joseph Yakely, III, 67, of Heflin, Alabama, will be Saturday, December 2, 2017, at 12:00 p.m. at Dryden Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Roland Brown and Dr. Larry Riddle officiating. Burial will follow in Upper Cane Creek Cemetery, Fruithurst, Alabama. Visitation will be Friday, December 1, 2017, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
John passed away on November 29, 2017, at NHC Healthcare in Anniston, Alabama. He was surrounded by family and friends when he went home to be with Jesus. Dryden Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
John is survived by his wife of 43 years, Deborah Dunn Yakely of Heflin, Alabama; a son and his wife, Matthew and Carrie Yakely of Spring Garden, Alabama; two daughters, Christen Yakely of Heflin, Alabama, and Lindsey Allen and her husband Josh of Muscadine, Alabama; four grandchildren, Caleb Yakely, Natalie Yakely, Sawyer Yakely, and Luke Allen; a sister, Mary Lynn Yakely of Browndale , Pennsylvania and also many nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Joseph Yakely, II, and Mary Skarl Yakely; and also his mother-in-law, Edna Furgerson Dunn.
John was born in Newark, New Jersey on December 6, 1949. He came to Alabama in 1969 to attend Jacksonville State University where he met the love of his life. John obtained a business degree in 1973. In 1996, he went on to earn his add-on degree in Education. He then obtained both his Master's degree and Educational Specialist degree in two years. He loved history, and he loved teaching it. John was an educator at Ranburne High School in the Cleburne County School System for almost 20 years. He retired in May 2016.
Most of all, John loved his family. He was especially proud of his grandchildren. He loved his country and was extremely patriotic. John was proud to tell everyone that his son, Matthew, serves in the National Guard and his grandson, Caleb, will begin serving in the Navy. He attended Golden Springs Baptist Church in Anniston, Alabama.
Pallbearers will be Caleb Yakely, Josh Allen, Jimmy Beam, Kenneth Duhon, Danny Dunn, Charlie Moore, Doug Perry, Marc Riddle, and Chase Whitley.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pearl Point Cancer Support, pearlpoint.org. Patients of Sarah Cannon Cancer Research Center benefit from this organization. John was part of a clinical research trial at Sarah Cannon in Nashville, Tennessee.
