Heflin - Services for Sammy Rex Freeman will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 31, 2016, at Heflin Baptist Church in Heflin, AL with Rev. Phillip Morris, Dr. Don Carroll, and Rev. Dave Roberts officiating. The family will recieve friends from 4 - 7 p.m. on Saturday, January 30, 2016 at Dryden Funeral Home in Heflin, AL. Mr. Freeman passed away on January 26, 2016 at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center in Anniston, AL.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Brenda Hughes Freeman; daughter Kaley (Chris) Oliver of Spring, Texas; son Brandon (Laurie) Freeman of Oxford, AL; grandson, Carson Freeman; granddaughters, Blakely Freeman, Regan Oliver, and Mikayla Oliver; sister Joyce (Gerald) Robinson of Heflin AL; brother, Larry (Diane) Freeman of Monticello, Flordia; nieces, Lucretia Pate, and Andrea Morgan; a nephew Judson Freeman; in-laws, Chester and Sybile Hughes; and sister-in-law, Nina (Tommy) Pike and Taylor Pike.
Pallbearers will be Judson Freeman, Taylor Pike, Michael Cavender, Joe Cavender, Bobby Bailey, Barry Brannon, and Bill Dempsey. Honorary pallbearers will be Alabama Diaster Relief Volunteers.
Mr. Freeman is preceded in death by his father, Dale Freeman and his mother, Gradice Summerville.
Mr. Freeman was a member of Heflin Baptist Church and graduated from Ranburne High School, Gadsden State Community College, and Jacksonville State University. He spent several years in the National Guard.
Mr. Freeman was employed by the U. S. Postal Service for 36 years. After retirement, Sammy continued to operate Sam's Pest Control and B & S Rentals. Those he served were not just his customers; they were his friends.
Sammy had a passion for disaster relief work. Serving as the Cleburne County Baptist Disaster Relief Director, Sammy was quick to gather a group together to meet the physcial and spirtual needs of those devasted by hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, or just a neighbor who needed a tree cut.
He enjoyed playing cards with his friends, deer hunting, boating with his grandchildren, and spending time with his family. He was always happy and smiling and willing to help thoses in need. He valued the friendship of many.
In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to the Cleburne County Baptist Disaster Relief, Cleburne Baptist Assocation at 903 Ross Street, Heflin AL; The Alabama Disaster Relief at P.O. Box 11870, Montgomery, AL 36111; or Heflin Baptist Church at P.O. Box 116, Heflin, AL 36264.
