Obituary for Chester Manco Hughes

Chester Manco  Hughes
Heflin - Chester Manco Hughes, age 94, died June 20, 2018, at Cleburne County Nursing Home. Services will be held at Dryden Funeral Home Chapel Saturday, June 23, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. with visitation from 12 until 2 p.m. Burial will follow at Heflin City Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Sybile Vise Hughes; two daughters, Brenda Elaine Freeman of Heflin and Nina Lee Pike (Tommy) of Henagar; three grandchildren; Kaley Freeman Oliver (Chris) of Spring, Texas, Brandon Hughes Freeman (Laurie) of Oxford, and Taylor Edward Pike (Kaylee) of Louisville, Kentucky; four great-grandchildren who knew him as Baba: Carson Freeman, Blakely Freeman, Reagan Oliver, and Mikayla Oliver; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Hughes was born in Steadman, Georgia, but lived most of his life in Cleburne County. He was a graduate of Cleburne County High School where he enjoyed playing and helping coach basketball. He was a member of Heflin Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday School teacher, Training Union Director, and other areas of service for many years .He faithfully served as a Deacon at Heflin Baptist for over 60 years. He was a Navy veteran who served on the U.S.S. Manning in the Philippines in World War
II. He worked as a barber and sold insurance in the early years after returning from service and studied electronics under the GI Bill. He was later employed by General Electric and Moore Business Forms. He taught at Ayers State Community College for a short time.

Mr. Hughes enjoyed fixing and repairing things, working in the yard, traveling, and reading. He enjoyed reading the Bible and westerns and having coffee with friends. For many years he was an avid Amateur Radio operator (K4VMH). He loved the Lord, his church, and his family. He was kind, soft spoken, and God serving. He was a wonderful example to anyone who knew him.

Mr. Hughes was preceded in death by his parents, Colonel Manco and Ezzie Dora Etta Hughes; two sisters, Bernice Hughes and Helen Robinson; three brothers, Cyril Hughes, Ray Hughes, and Jarrell Hughes; and a cousin, Lois Newman, a part of the Hughes family for many years: and a son-in-law, Sammy Freeman ..

The Chester Hughes family is thankful for the loving and caring staff of Cleburne County Nursing Home.
